Think Like An Analyst

Think Like An Analyst.jpg

Let me start with a precious quote from a great thinker:

All the problems of the world could be settled easily if men were only willing to think. The trouble is that men very often resort to all sorts of devices in order not to think because thinking is such hard work.
— Thomas J. Watson

Imagine you are an analyst! Your manager just assigned you on a new project. The client is in the business of manufacturing and selling beer. And before you could settle down, you get a large Excel file in your email with the subject line “Analyze Historical Sales and Submit Your Findings by EOD”.

So naturally, you take a deep sigh, open the Excel file and start inspecting it like a curious cat. Upon inspecting you find it has columns like:

  • Sales Month
  • State
  • City
  • Product ID
  • Quantity Sold
  • Avg Price

If you are an analyst, first of all, you grin with a wide smile for finding such neatly named Excel with valuable columns like location, time-trend and price by product already available in the file. And then you take a light sip of your client’s beer and start wondering.

No this is the time to think. Let me show you some first 10 rows of the data.
